About
Mt. Kearsarge Indian Museum(MKIM), located in Warner, NH, is an educational and cultural center that connects visitors with 20,000 years of ongoing Native expression. Every year, over 8000 visitors of all ages connect to Native American culture by experiencing guided tours, workshops, presentations, and events, including our signature Powwow.Central to our mission is to help visitors recognize the rich heritage and important contributions of Native Americansto America, encompassing arts and crafts, governance philosophies, cuisines, and sustainable coexistence with the environment.A second key goal is to communicate that Native Americans were not eradicated centuries ago, but still live among us.In this way,MKIM is a particularly important cultural treasure for New Hampshire, which does not have any federally recognized tribes or reservation lands and thus offers limited ways for residents and visitors to learn about Native peoples.
Unusually, the museum does not focus on one particular tribe or area, but offers a journey across North America. The 7 geographically-oriented galleries display breathtaking baskets, beadwork, and other artifacts, exhibits, and pieces that showcase the diverse lifeways and artistic heritage of Native peoples from across the continent.
Even more important than galleries displaying interesting items, MKIM strives to offer extensive programming that gives voice to present-day Native art, dance, stories, and viewpoints. In the past couple of years, we have collaborated with organizations to offer Abenaki snow games, stargazing events, poetry readings, lectures, dance demonstrations, book groups, crafts workshops, a string quartet, a social dance, and other interactive, engaging, family-friendly events.
Mission Statement
