Mission Statement
Help Restore a Community Treasure
The North Star House isn’t just a beautiful old home; it’s a cornerstone of Nevada County’s history, creativity, and community spirit. Our mission is to rehabilitate and transform this historic landmark into a premier cultural event center while honoring our region’s rich legacy in the arts, letters, and sciences.
Designed in 1905 by the famed architect Julia Morgan, the North Star House was built for Arthur De Wint Foote, superintendent of the North Star Mine, and his wife Mary Hallock Foote, a respected author and illustrator. The 10,000-square-foot Arts & Crafts style home was once a gathering place for thinkers, leaders, and creatives - and we're working hard to bring that spirit back.
But we can't do it alone.
Over the years, the House endured severe neglect, damaging alterations, and decades of vacancy. Thanks to a generous land donation and the formation of the North Star Historic Conservancy in 2003, we’ve made incredible progress but there’s still work to be done.
