The Preventive Search and Rescue Initiative Inc

About

The Preventive Search and Rescue Initiative Inc. (PSAR Initiative) exists to make prevention the first priority outdoors. Our organization is built on the principle that the simplest steps often save the most lives. We teach and promote the three P’s: Plan · Prepare · Prevent.

We believe:

  • Everyone deserves to enjoy the outdoors safely.
  • Prevention is the most effective form of search and rescue.
  • Protecting trails and wild places goes hand in hand with keeping people safe.
  • Public lands should stay open and accessible for all.
  • Time spent in nature helps prevent isolation and builds healthier communities.

Whom we serve:

  • The 80 percent of people who are new to hiking or casual hikers (the group most at risk of injury or getting lost).
  • Families, youth, and communities who want to connect with nature but may not have formal training.
  • Experienced hikers who want to lead chapters, share skills, and strengthen the prevention movement.

Our values:

  • Clarity: we communicate with blunt, easy-to-remember messages.
  • Community: we encourage connection and inclusion through the outdoors.
  • Action: we measure impact by lives saved, injuries prevented, and trails protected.
  • Access: we stand against unnecessary closures and work to keep public lands open.

Through outreach, community events, education, and positive messaging, PSAR Initiative delivers prevention that is accessible, memorable, and effective.
