About this Opportunity
Begin Anew is a faith-based nonprofit, offering educational programming for the purpose of empowering individuals to overcome obstacles created by poverty. We provide High School Equivalency test prep, English Language Learning classes at three different levels, and Computer and Job skills classes for adults, as well as mentoring and access to resources. All programming and testing are free for the students. We also offer free childcare.
Under the guidance and direction of the Program Manager, ELL Teachers will:
- Provide effective instruction in English to a group of students at beginner, intermediate or advanced level using provided curriculum material. This will require limited prep time outside of classroom hours.
- Work closely with and provide regular feedback to the Program Manager
- Develop relationships with students
- Uphold the mission and vision of Begin Anew
- Teaching assistants will provide support in the classroom, lead some classroom activities, and may be asked to lead the class when the teacher is absent.
Previous teaching experience is helpful but not required. We are just looking for a willingness to serve and a desire to help others achieve their goals. Similarly, knowledge of a foreign language may prove helpful, but is not at all necessary. Our students come from many varying sociolinguistic backgrounds, and all instruction is given in English.
Classes are held at the Woodbine Campus on Monday and Thursday evenings from 6–8pm. We ask that volunteers commit to one 2-hour shift each week for an entire semester.
This position requires volunteers to complete an application and pass a background check. Training and resources will be provided to you by the Program Manager.
