About this Opportunity
Join the City of Richmond, Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities' Cemetery Division for a weekend workday at Riverview Cemetery. Riverview Cemetery was established in 1887, sits along the James River, spans nearly 90 acres, and reflects the city’s diverse history through its many community and veterans’ sections. The grounds include areas for American Legionnaires, Greek Orthodox and Armenian families, Confederate veterans, and a Spanish-American War memorial, while also acknowledging its past segregation until 1968 with respect and sensitivity. Volunteers are needed to assist with completing string weeding, cleaning grave markers, clearing sidewalks, removing debris and brush, and removing non-compliant flower arrangements in accordance with city codes and ordinances.
Tools and gloves will be provided. We recommend wearing a hat, long sleeves, long pants, and sturdy shoes. Sunglasses and sunscreen are also recommended. Volunteers are asked to bring water bottles and snacks. Children are welcome, provided an adult is present to supervise them.
WHERE: Riverview Cemetery - 1401 Randolph Street, Richmond, VA 23220. From S. Belvidere Street, turn right onto Idlewood Avenue, take the first exit from the roundabout onto Idlewood Avenue, turn left onto S. Harrison Street, and left onto S. Randolph Street, and slightly left into Riverview Cemetery. Please park along the road, leaving enough room for other cars to pass. We will have a sign-in table near the entrance. Please be sure to stop and sign in, even if you've volunteered with us before.
