Organizational Description:
On the Road Collaborative (On the Road) is a non-profit youth empowerment organization in the Shenandoah Valley. Our mission is to empower middle and high school youth by providing equal access to educational opportunities and hands-on career experiences. Through our unique after-school learning programs, we connect our youth to trusting adult relationships and equitable opportunities, enrich their lives with additional learning opportunities that inspire growth, and empower our youth to realize and fulfill their promise. Our programs are offered for youth in Harrisonburg (Skyline Middle School, Thomas Harrison Middle School and Harrisonburg High School) and Waynesboro (Kate Collins Middle School and Waynesboro High School). We serve more than 300 youth annually.
Youth Leader Essential Roles and Responsibilities:
Youth Leaders are the lead staff for the On the Road Collaborative middle and high school afterschool programs, and work with volunteers, teachers and families to deliver a high-quality program. Youth Leaders are responsible for leading youth through structured academic and enrichment programming.
- Manage a class of about 15 middle or high school youth using a strong presence, clear, consistent learning procedures, and relevant and engaging activities throughout the program duration
- Create a safe, positive learning environment that promotes our core values of focused effort, service, perseverance and courage
- Motivate youth to grow and succeed; getting to know each youth, providing encouragement and serving as a positive role model
- Serve as an academic coach; assisting youth with their homework, school assignments and helping them develop goals and organization skills
- Consistently prepared to implement lesson plans and teambuilding activities that consider the interests and needs of the group
- Communicate professionally with families, teachers and community members about the program and work with them to strengthen support for youth
- Direct volunteers and utilize their abilities to help you deliver quality programming
- Actively participate in all required in-person trainings/meetings, and perform other duties as assigned by site leadership
Qualifications:
Strong candidates for this position will demonstrate the following characteristics:
- Knowledge of, and commitment to, the On the Road Collaborative program and mission
- Experience engaging, leading and/or teaching youth aged 11-18, individually and in groups
- Dependability and commitment to regular work attendance
- Positive attitude and is proactive in addressing challenges
- Commitment to youth development and achievement
- Passion for working in a diverse, driven team setting
- Willingness to learn students math, science, language arts, and/or social studies content
- Proficient using Google Applications
- Proficiency in Spanish or Arabic a plus
Position Details:
Youth Leaders must be available at least 2 afternoons per week (Monday-Thursday) and for bi-weekly Friday afternoon staff trainings during the 2024-2025 school year.
The starting pay is $15/hour.
Youth Leaders typically work between 6-12 hours per week, which includes weekly planning and meeting time.
Harrisonburg and Waynesboro positions are both available.
