About this Opportunity
Introduction
This volunteer serves as an administrative assistant in the Fees Office at Blue Ridge Parkway and provides administrative support services to the Law Enforcement, Emergency Services and Fees Division. The volunteer administrative assistant works for the Revenue and Fee Business Specialist.
Major Duties
- Actively participates in a safe workplace culture.
- Serves as a front-line representative for the National Park Service.
- Prepares, develops, formats, proofreads and types documents and correspondence, including letters, memoranda, and reports, in final form from hand-written notes or drafts.
- Receives and directs telephone calls and visitors, and answer routine, non-technical requests for information.
- Responds to requests for information via written correspondence, telephone, or internet by providing appropriate printed or email responses.
- Operate a variety of office equipment including fax machines, copiers, printers, postage meters and mail equipment, and automated telephone and voice-mail systems.
- Establishes, updates and maintains office records and correspondence files. Maintains, purges, and disposes of office records/files in accordance with established regulations and procedures.
- Distributes incoming and outgoing mail and deliveries.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills Required
- Ability to pass a background check.
- Basic knowledge of office functions.
- Basic knowledge of Blue Ridge Parkway visitor services and resources.
- Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database management software.
- Knowledge of clerical procedures used by the office to maintain files.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment including personal computers, telephone switchboard, printers, fax machines, scanners, and copy machines.
- Ability to learn program operations sufficient to respond to inquiries for routine information.
Physical Demands
Work is performed in an office. Work is primarily performed in a sitting position but requires walking, standing, bending and carrying light objects.
Work Environment
Work is performed in an office setting. Area is lighted, heated and ventilated. Occasional attendance in a field setting may be required.
Work Schedule
- Early May – Mid November 2020
- 16 – 20 Hours per week preferred Monday - Friday. Hours per week are negotiable.
Uniform/PPE
While on duty, the volunteer will wear a NPS volunteer shirt and name tag (provided). The volunteer will supply his/her own khaki pants, brown belt, and brown shoes. The volunteer should look professional at all times and follow the Blue Ridge Parkway’s volunteer uniform policy.
Government Vehicles & Property / Personal Equipment
- Volunteer may be driving a government-owned vehicle.
- Volunteer’s personal equipment will not be used while on duty.
Reimbursement
Volunteer will not be reimbursed for expenses.
