Maintenance Volunteers support the primary mission of the National Park Service to preserve and protect the park resources, and to promote the enjoyment of those resources by visitors. Maintenance volunteers support operational maintenance work including but not limited to custodial work, minor repairs, snow removal, and assisting park craft and trades staff. Work may be performed alone (or with a spouse if applicable), with other volunteers or park staff.
Length of Hosting: Minimum of 2 months.
Duties include: Custodial (stock toilet paper, clean mirrors/floors/sinks/toilets, clean campfire/picnic grills, etc.), perform minor repairs/minor construction efforts to structures (interior & exterior), split and stack firewood, assist with snow removal, assist with mowing, landscaping and gardening, and assist park staff with other duties as assigned. Work will be performed at locations within the park and will consist of indoor and outdoor work where thermal stresses are present.
Skills: Volunteers must be able to use common hand tools, be able to communicate with visitors and co-workers (utilizing exemplary customer service skills), be able to work outdoors in inclement weather and remote locations where there are ticks, spiders, snakes, etc. , and work with minimal supervision. Volunteers must possess safe work practices and document/record volunteer hours. Volunteers must be able to utilize 2-way radio communications and possess a valid driver’s license if utilizing government equipment/vehicles.
Compensation: This volunteer position provides an opportunity to gain valuable experience within a professional work environment, along with the satisfaction of helping preserve and maintain the public lands in a national park. Hours will be available based on work demands and availability.
RV sites available: Requires a 32 hour week commitment for 1 volunteer or a 40 hour a week commitment (20 hours each) for a couple.
