About this Opportunity
Skirmishers during the Civil War, advanced in front of the main battle line and acted as the eyes and ears of their army. Members of the Stones River NB Skirmisher Battalion will perform a similar service in modern times by walking and biking across the battlefield to protect the park's uniques natural and cultural resources and help visitors have an enjoyable and meaningful experience.
TIME REQUIREMENTS: At least one day per week (4-8 hour shift)
SUPERVISOR: Park Ranger (Protection)
DUTIES:
Walks or bikes on park trails or roads,
Completes necessary training for visitor services volunteers and employees,
Achieves certification in Module 102 of the Interpretive Development Program (Effective Informal Interpretation),
Interacts with visitors and provides orientation to the Battlefield and interpretive themes,
Reports suspicious and/or illegal activities to the protection ranger,
Maintains a log of all patrol and visitor contacts, and
Performs minor trail maintenance while reporting larger problems to the Chief of Maintenance.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR THE POSITION:
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills,
Ability to handle stressful situations in a professional manner,
Ability to work independently,
General knowledge of the Civil War and the Battle of Stones River are desirable, and
Must be able to walk four miles and/or bike ten miles.
