LAKE HAVASU FIELD OFFICE
VOLUNTEER RECREATION SITE HOST

C. Duty Hours
The Recreation Site Host will determine his or her own "on-duty" and "off-duty" hours. It is expected that the Host will spend a minimum of at least four days and four nights at the recreation site each week. Volunteers will not work more than 25 hours a week, 8 hours a day, from sunup to sundown only. Volunteers are required to notify the Camp Host Volunteer Coordinator of any leave of absence greater than two days (Medical or personal) and to provide reasonable notice (2 weeks) of intention to leave.
D. Requirements
The host must be able to:
- work in a team environment and also independently,
- have excellent customer service skills,
- capable of dealing with stressful situations in a professional manner,
- be in good physical condition (able to lift 20lbs, stand for long periods of time, walk a mile, and bend over to retrieve trash, etc),
- be firm with campers,
- communicate needs and issues to the appropriate BLM staff, and
- be comfortable with limited BLM presence on a day to day basis.
- be able to utilize recreation.gov website from personal device (tablet/smart phone)
E. Work Environment
The majority of host work is outside. The volunteer must have prior knowledge of Lake Havasu desert terrain, extreme climate conditions and the ability to live in relatively remote areas sometimes with few amenities. Host must be familiar with safe and appropriate ways to deal with potential environmental conditions (extreme heat, flash flooding, high winds, etc).
A. Visitor Services The host will be expected to serve as a visitor services/ interpretive resource person equipped to discuss and answer campground visitor inquiries concerning regional natural history, nearby points of interest, local road conditions, types of recreational activities in the area, and so forth.
-Wear a BLM hat or shirt while on duty
-Dust picnic tables and collect litter
- Inform visitors of local sites and recreational opportunities
- Answer any questions or direct visitors to the Lake Havasu Field Office for more information
- Inform visitors of the 14 day dispersed camping regulations at the time of their arrival
- Monitor 14 day use compliance (Visitors should be gone by noon on their 15th day.)
- Inform visitors of campground regulations (See attached)
- Inform visitors of Leave No Trace and Tread Lightly principles (See attached documents)
- Document any illegal activity and report back to Camp Host Volunteer Coordinator or BLM law enforcement
B. Site Maintenance The host will be responsible for general landscaping and cleanliness of the recreation site as well as reporting any repair and site needs to BLM staff. Host will always wear proper personal protective equipment and limit use of mechanized equipment to assigned project area.
-Identify damage to post and cable barrier
-Trim trees and vegetation
-Dispose of Burro manure
-Check/empty garbage cans
-Collect any gathered debris/waste and transport to designated dump locations
-Mop out/sweep and clean restroom daily
-Check/replenish toilet paper daily
-Clear spider webs from the restroom
-Check vault toilet water and waste levels
-Keep sidewalk clear and clean
-Promptly report any mechanical issues or supply needs to BLM staff
-Keep fee envelopes in stock and at the fee tube
- Inform BLM before fee envelope supply runs out
C. Maintain Host Station/Personal Property The host will be responsible for compliance with all Federal and State laws regarding the licensing and insuring of their personal automobiles. The host will be responsible for their personal belongings. All recreation site rules and regulations apply to the host
-RV and personal equipment should be licensed, in working order, and clean.
-Personal belongings will be kept within assigned host area.
-Any belonging kept outside of the RV will be preapproved by BLM.
-A maximum of two volunteer owned vehicles may be kept on site. All vehicles and trailers must be kept in working condition. No vehicle maintenance or servicing is authorized on site.
- Host must be able to vacate personal property in event of a camp closer, government shutdown or host termination.
