Title: Visitor Center Information Desk Volunteer
Job Description:
Volunteer will staff the Visitor Center information desk. Volunteer will:
- Greet park visitors
- Distribute area maps and brochures
- Answer questions about the Lincoln Home tour
- Provide driving and walking directions to a variety of city and state attractions
- Explain and issue Junior Ranger program materials
- Answer questions related to park operation and the Lincoln family
- Inform visitors of potential safety hazards
- Assist park staff with implementing emergency operation plans
- Operate park telephone for internal and external calls
- Assist Park staff with tracking site visitation
- Greet and orient large groups to site
- Organize groups by size for touring Lincoln Home
- Provide information about cultural, historical, and natural points of interest in the community of Springfield and surrounding area
- Provide site orientation and historic overview of Springfield using Visitor Center exhibit model and displays
- Issue free Lincoln Home tour tickets to the public
Work Schedule: We are looking for individuals who can volunteer for weekly 4-hour shifts, either in the morning or afternoon, particularly during the months of March - December. Current openings for this position include Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
Skills Needed/Preferred:
- Have excellent customer service skills, including being
- Friendly, patient, outgoing, and enjoy working with the public
- Able to communicate verbal and written information in a clear, concise manner
- Comfortable working with high volumes of visitors
- Be knowledgeable about local area attractions, or willing to learn about them
- Be familiar with computer operation
- Be able to remain calm and courteous during high public visitation and emergencies
- Be able to communicate with other staff members using a park radio
Physical Demands: Long periods of standing may be required during busy season. Lifting of moderately heavy objects such as publication boxes may be necessary.
