In the fall of 1863, Union and Confederate forces locked in a struggle over the railroad town of Chattanooga, known as the "Gateway to the Deep South." Two armies totaling more than 130,000 soldiers clashed together in the woods and farmlands of north Georgia in September in the Battle of Chickamauga. The Confederates were victorious at Chickamauga, however renewed fighting in Chattanooga that November provided Union troops victory and control of the city. Preserved in 1890 as the nation's first national military park, commemorating the actions and bravery of both sides, Chickamauga & Chattanooga NMP now manages over 9,000 acres with stories stretching back 12,000 years and forward to the present day.

As ambassadors of Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park, Bicycle Patrol volunteers promote the understanding and protection of the park’s natural and cultural resources through visitor education and assistance, with a commitment to safety and professionalism. Duties may include: 

• Patrolling park grounds by bicycle, providing a non-law enforcement presence to make informative visitor contacts information regarding park resources, including applicable rules and regulations.
• Reporting all visitor emergencies to appropriate emergency personnel and rendering first aid as requested or required without going beyond the level of volunteer training and expertise.
• Identify hazards and resource damage, reporting any issues to their supervisor.
• Completing daily patrol logs and submitting them to their supervisor.
• Utilizing appropriate precautions to ensure personal and visitor safety.

Additional duties may include: 

• Assisting park staff during special events such as battle commemorations, as available.

Requirements: Bicycle Patrol volunteers must: 

• Be at least 18 years of age and be fit enough to safely do their assigned work.
• Possess a valid state driver’s license.
• Commit to a minimum weekly or bi-weekly 4-hour shift.
• Familiarize themselves with park rules and regulations and personally adhere to them.
• Be comfortable making friendly informative contacts with park visitors.
• Attend required Bicycle Patrol volunteer training and complete bicycle skills assessment with designated supervisor.
• Be able to communicate information clearly and concisely.
• Utilize personal equipment in addition to equipment provided by park (a waiver for use of personal property must be completed).
• Check-in and out with the ranger-on-duty at the beginning and end of each shift.
• Wear the provided VIP uniform and/or identifying patch and act in a courteous and professional manner representative of the NPS.
