About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children and youth experiencing housing instability in New York City. Through mentorship, social-emotional learning, academic enrichment, creative expression, and community partnerships, MAP works to close opportunity gaps and create safe, consistent, and empowering spaces for young people to thrive.

Role Overview

We are seeking a Volunteer Nonprofit Attorney to provide legal guidance on issues related to nonprofit governance, compliance, contracts, and partnerships. This role is ideal for an attorney with experience in nonprofit or corporate law who wants to use their expertise to advance equity in education and help strengthen MAP’s organizational foundation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice on nonprofit governance, bylaws, and board responsibilities
  • Review and draft contracts, MOUs, partnership agreements, and volunteer/service agreements
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local nonprofit regulations
  • Advise on risk management and liability issues related to programs and partnerships
  • Support filings and documentation related to nonprofit and tax-exempt status
  • Serve as a thought partner to leadership on organizational growth and compliance

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
  • Licensed and in good standing to practice law in New York State (preferred) or another U.S. jurisdiction
  • Experience in nonprofit, corporate, or tax-exempt law
  • Strong communication skills and ability to translate legal concepts into accessible guidance
  • Commitment to mission-driven, equity-centered work

Commitment

  • Volunteer role, approximately 2–5 hours per month (flexible)
  • Remote with occasional in-person meetings or calls as needed
  • Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
