A Free Bird is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization headquartered in New York City, operating fully remote. We empower children diagnosed with cancer by giving them opportunities to explore and develop their artistic passions. Through creative mediums like music, writing, acting, painting, and performance, we help children experience healing and self-expression in transformative ways.
About the Role
As a Human Resources Volunteer, you’ll play a key role in strengthening team performance, supporting interdepartmental communication, and ensuring a seamless experience for our volunteers and staff. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to mission-driven work while gaining real-world HR experience in a collaborative, digital-first nonprofit.
You’ll work alongside passionate professionals and support the full spectrum of HR activities—from recruitment and onboarding to engagement and policy optimization. Whether you're building foundational skills or bringing years of experience, your contribution will be impactful and deeply valued.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate and participate in interviews, onboarding sessions, and orientation calls.
- Post, update, and manage job descriptions across recruiting platforms.
- Ensure the accuracy and organization of digital personnel files and training documentation.
- Support employee relations, including conflict resolution and compliance tracking.
- Assist with the rollout of HR initiatives such as employee surveys and performance feedback cycles.
- Analyze current HR workflows and propose improvements to optimize efficiency and experience.
What We’re Looking For
- 1–2+ years of experience in Human Resources or a related field (internship, academic, or professional)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Proven ability to collaborate cross-functionally in a remote setting
- Problem-solving mindset with the ability to recommend actionable solutions
- Tech-savvy: proficient in Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and comfortable using digital collaboration tools
- A high level of professionalism, discretion, and empathy in working with diverse teams
Additional Details
- This is a remote, volunteer position that requires a minimum 3-month commitment.
- Availability of 5–10 hours/week is expected depending on your level and responsibilities.
- You must have reliable internet access, a laptop or desktop computer, and availability for at least two virtual check-ins per week via phone or video.
- Internship credit can be provided for eligible students.
