About A Free Bird
A Free Bird is a fully remote 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that empowers children diagnosed with cancer by providing access to the healing power of the arts. Through music, writing, painting, dance, acting, and other creative outlets, we help young artists transform their pain into purpose. We believe every child deserves the freedom to heal, express, and dream big—and we’re building the platform to make that possible.
This is more than a volunteer position. It’s an opportunity to lead communication strategies that amplify a powerful mission—while gaining real leadership, media, and nonprofit management experience.

You will lead communication-based activities including media outreach, press development, public relations, and internal storytelling. You’ll work directly with the President and lead a small team to drive growth, build media relationships, and keep the world inspired by our mission.

- Build and manage relationships with media contacts, journalists, and digital platforms
- Write and edit compelling press releases, internal communications, and public-facing content
- Develop messaging strategies that connect our mission to the right audiences
- Act as (or appoint) a spokesperson for media inquiries and interviews
- Collaborate with the President and other department leads to set communication goals
- Mentor and manage a small volunteer communications team
- Support major campaigns, fundraising events, and partnerships with content and visibility strategy
- Report on KPIs and track communications success across platforms
What We’re Looking For
- 2+ years of professional experience in communications, public relations, or related fields
- Strong writing and editing skills; able to deliver polished copy on deadline
- Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience) in PR, Communications, Marketing, or a related field
- Experience managing or mentoring a team a plus
- Understanding of social media strategy and press outreach
- Creativity, confidence, and the ability to bring forward new ideas
- Preferred: Familiarity with nonprofit communications or cause-driven messaging
- Bonus: Local/hyperlocal media relationships or media list access
What You’ll Gain
- Experience leading a real communications department in a nationally recognized nonprofit
- Portfolio-ready content and press work that supports a meaningful mission
- Hands-on collaboration with the organization’s President and executive leadership
- Training and exposure in nonprofit communications, event promotion, and media strategy
- Letter of recommendation and references upon successful completion
- Flexible, remote-friendly schedule with asynchronous collaboration
Additional Details

- Remote: Yes, 100% remote
- Duration: 3-month minimum
- Requires access to a computer, reliable internet, and comfort working in cloud-based tools
