About A Free Bird

A Free Bird is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in New York City, operating fully remote. We empower children diagnosed with cancer by helping them explore their artistic talents. From visual arts and music to writing and performance, we provide creative outlets that support emotional healing and personal growth.

About the Role

As a Human Resources Manager (Volunteer), you’ll be a key strategic partner within our organization—leading HR initiatives, overseeing department operations, and managing a team of volunteers and interns. You will be instrumental in shaping our HR strategy, maintaining strong team dynamics, and creating a positive, productive experience for all team members.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone with HR leadership experience looking to give back while strengthening their professional portfolio in a fully remote, mission-driven environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the HR department and lead a team of coordinators and associates.
  • Oversee the end-to-end recruitment cycle, including job postings, resume reviews, interviews, and onboarding.
  • Develop and enforce HR policies, procedures, and documentation best practices.
  • Resolve employee relations matters with professionalism and discretion.
  • Support performance management initiatives, including check-ins, evaluations, and feedback collection.
  • Lead department meetings and serve as the HR point of contact for cross-functional team leaders.
  • Collaborate with leadership to align HR strategies with organizational goals and volunteer experience.
  • Mentor junior HR volunteers and interns to promote their development and success.

What We’re Looking For

  • 1–2+ years of HR leadership experience or team management in a nonprofit or corporate setting
  • Strong understanding of human resources practices and policies
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to lead with empathy, clarity, and a commitment to collaboration
  • Experience with virtual team tools such as Google Workspace, Slack, ClickUp, and Zoom
  • High level of discretion and professionalism when handling sensitive information
  • A self-starter who can lead projects independently and contribute to strategic goals

Additional Details

  • This is a remote, volunteer position that requires a minimum 6-month commitment.
  • A consistent 10–15 hours/week is expected, with flexibility in scheduling.
  • You must have access to a reliable internet connection, computer, and be available for weekly video meetings and team check-ins.
  • Internship or leadership credit can be provided if applicable.
