About this Opportunity

Human Resources Coordinator (Volunteer – Remote)

Location: Remote (U.S. Based)

Commitment: 5-10 hours/week | 3-month minimum

Organization: A Free Bird | 501(c)(3) Nonprofit

About Us

A Free Bird is a fully remote 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that empowers children diagnosed with cancer through the healing power of the arts. From music and writing to acting, painting, and performance, we give young artists the tools to soar beyond their diagnosis through creative expression.

Joining our team means becoming part of a mission-driven, collaborative environment where your work has a direct and lasting impact on children’s lives—while giving you the opportunity to grow professionally, lead cross-functional teams, and develop strong strategic HR experience in a remote-first nonprofit.

About the Role

We’re looking for a skilled and motivated Human Resources Coordinator to help lead and execute HR operations that shape the day-to-day experience of our volunteers and department leaders. You’ll work cross-functionally with leadership to drive strategic HR initiatives, improve systems, and uphold our people-first culture. This is an exciting opportunity for a mid-level HR professional who is ready to step into leadership and make real change.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee full-cycle HR processes: recruitment, onboarding, policy updates, performance reviews, compliance, training, and retention.
  • Conduct and improve onboarding programs that drive engagement and ensure clarity across departments.
  • Provide strategic support to department leads by aligning HR tools with operational goals.
  • Manage performance tracking, recognition, and payroll processing (via our internal system).
  • Lead or support investigations, grievance resolution, disciplinary processes, and coaching as needed.
  • Oversee or coordinate HRIS and employee data management with an eye for compliance and accuracy.
  • Collaborate with team leads on employee relations and communication strategies.
  • Prepare and analyze quarterly and annual HR metrics (turnover, engagement, headcount).
  • Identify areas for HR innovation and efficiency—and take initiative to lead solutions.

What We’re Looking For

  • Minimum 3 years of professional HR experience (volunteer or paid).
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s or relevant certification (PHR, SHRM-CP) is a strong plus.
  • Deep knowledge of HR best practices, compliance, and nonprofit operations.
  • Strong judgment, analytical thinking, and emotional intelligence.
  • Comfortable advising leadership and presenting solutions at a strategic level.
  • Experience with Google Workspace, Microsoft Office (especially Excel), and digital HR tools.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage time independently in a remote-first environment.
  • Collaborative, proactive, and solutions-focused mindset.

Role Details

  • Time commitment: 5-10 hours per week
  • Length: 3-month minimum
  • Remote: 100% remote
  • Schedule: Flexible hours, with 2 required check-ins per week via Zoom or Google Meet
  • Must have access to a computer, reliable internet, and ability to manage responsibilities independently

Why Join Us?

  • Work alongside passionate professionals from across the U.S.
  • Gain valuable leadership experience in a mission-focused HR environment
  • Help build meaningful systems that directly impact the lives of young people
  • Add strategic volunteer leadership to your resume in a flexible, virtual setting
