OpenGov Africa is a civic-tech STEM startup using open source technology, data, and community-driven innovation to reimagine governance, strengthen transparency, and empower citizen participation across Africa.

We work with citizens, policymakers, researchers, and technologists to foster open governance models that empower communities, reduce corruption, and create equitable development opportunities.

As a new startup, we are seeking Data Scientist Volunteers to help OpenGov Africa leverage data for transparency, accountability, and citizen participation. You will play a key role in analyzing governance data, building dashboards, and creating insights that drive advocacy and decision-making.

This role is ideal for data enthusiasts who want to apply their skills to real-world governance and social impact challenges.

Key Responsibilities

  • Data Collection: Source and organize governance-related datasets (open data, policy, and civic tech).
  • Data Analysis: Conduct statistical analysis and extract insights to support decision-making.
  • Visualization: Develop dashboards and visual tools to present governance data accessibly.
  • Collaboration: Work with policy and advocacy teams to support data-driven campaigns.
  • Innovation: Explore AI, machine learning, or predictive modeling in governance contexts.
  • Documentation: Ensure proper documentation of datasets and data analysis processes.

Qualifications

  • Background in data science, statistics, computer science, or related fields.
  • Proficiency in Python, R, SQL, or similar data tools.
  • Experience with visualization tools (Tableau, PowerBI, etc.).
  • Ability to explain complex data insights to non-technical audiences.
  • Passion for transparency, open data, and social impact.

Expected Requirements

  • Time Commitment: Approx. 6-10 hours per week (flexible, remote).
  • Commitment Period: Minimum 6 months preferred.
  • Remote Work: Must have reliable internet access.
