About this Opportunity

OpenGov Africa is a civic-tech STEM startup using open source technology, data, and community-driven innovation to reimagine governance, strengthen transparency, and empower citizen participation across Africa.

We work with citizens, policymakers, researchers, and technologists to foster open governance models that empower communities, reduce corruption, and create equitable development opportunities. As a new startup, we are seeking a Strategy Lead Volunteer to guide the long-term vision and growth of OpenGov Africa. You will be responsible for shaping the organization’s strategic direction, aligning programs with mission and impact goals, and helping position OpenGov Africa as a leader in governance innovation.

This role is ideal for someone with a big-picture mindset who thrives at the intersection of leadership, innovation, and social change.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Planning: Develop and refine the organizational roadmap in collaboration with leadership.
  • Program Alignment: Ensure initiatives align with mission, values, and growth priorities.
  • Market Analysis: Research trends in governance, civic tech, and community growth to inform strategy.
  • Partnerships: Identify and foster partnerships to expand reach and impact.
  • Innovation: Explore new models, tools, and opportunities for scaling OpenGov Africa.
  • Advisory: Provide guidance to project managers and teams on aligning their work with strategy.

Qualifications

  • Background in strategy, community leadership, business development, or policy.
  • Strong analytical and planning skills.
  • Ability to think long-term and connect dots across teams.
  • Excellent communication and advisory skills.
  • Passion for governance, civic engagement, and open movements.

Expected Requirements

  • Time Commitment: Approx. 6-8 hours per week (flexible, remote).
  • Commitment Period: Minimum 6 months preferred.
  • Remote Work: Must have reliable internet access.
