OpenGov Africa is a civic-tech STEM startup using open source technology, data, and community-driven innovation to reimagine governance, strengthen transparency, and empower citizen participation across Africa.
We work with citizens, policymakers, researchers, and technologists to foster open governance models that empower communities, reduce corruption, and create equitable development opportunities. As a new startup, we are seeking Legal Volunteers to support OpenGov Africa’s governance, compliance, and legal frameworks. You will play a critical role in ensuring the organization operates responsibly, transparently, and in alignment with legal requirements across different jurisdictions.
This role is ideal for law students, recent graduates, or legal professionals interested in community, governance, and social impact law.
Key Responsibilities
- Legal Compliance: Review and advise on organizational policies, governance documents, and agreements.
- Policy Development: Assist in drafting organizational bylaws, privacy policies, and data protection guidelines.
- Advisory: Provide legal insights on partnerships, collaborations, and advocacy campaigns.
- Research: Conduct legal research on governance, accountability, and community laws in Africa.
- Documentation: Support the creation of contracts, MOUs, and volunteer agreements.
- Risk Management: Identify and advise on potential legal risks and mitigations.
Qualifications
- Background in law (LLB, JD, or equivalent; students and graduates welcome).
- Law students are welcome
- Knowledge of community law, international law, or governance frameworks (preferred).
- Strong research and writing skills.
- Attention to detail and ability to review policies and contracts.
- Passion for open governance and civic engagement.
Expected Requirements
- Time Commitment: Approx. 4-6 hours per week (flexible, remote).
- Commitment Period: Minimum 6 months preferred.
- Remote Work: Must have reliable internet access.
