About this Opportunity

BARTON HEIGHTS CEMETERIES CLEANUP

Join the City of Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities and the Descendants Council of Greater Richmond for a weekend workday at the Barton Heights Cemeteries (est. 1815), the final resting place of Josiah Crump, Richard G. Forrester, Lucy Goode Brooks, and thousands of other African Americans.  Volunteers are needed to help remove trash, clear overgrowth, small trees, and bushes along the fence line, haul accumulated brush, complete string trimming, and uncover long-hidden grave markers.

Tools, gloves, water, and snacks will be provided, though we encourage you to bring your own water bottle.  We recommend wearing a hat, long sleeves, long pants, and sturdy shoes.   Sunglasses and sunscreen are also recommended.  Children are welcome, as long as they are supervised by an adult.

WHERE: Barton Heights Cemeteries, 1700 Lamb Avenue, Richmond.  Please park along the road on the Lamb Avenue side of the cemetery, or along Welford Street or Minor Street. We will have a sign-in table near the entrance.  Please be sure to stop and sign in, even if you’ve volunteered with us before.

WHEN: Saturday, May 17th, from 9am – 12pm

For more information, please contact Kimberly Jackson at [email protected].
