Organization Description: Build, RVA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit makerspace community in Richmond, VA, dedicated to providing affordable access to tools, resources, and knowledge. We support entrepreneurs, creators, makers, and inventors by connecting them with a community of science-based innovators and artists in an environment where ideas become reality.

Volunteer Position Description & Purpose: We’re seeking a safety-focused, hands-on volunteer to help monitor the woodshop during open hours, perform light maintenance on machines, and support members in their woodworking projects. This role is essential in maintaining a safe, functional, and welcoming shop environment. You’ll help ensure machines are operating correctly, offer guidance to members using tools, and coordinate with other volunteers on basic machine upkeep and repairs.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Monitor the woodshop during open hours to ensure safe tool use by members
  • Intervene or assist when members are at risk of harming themselves or equipment
  • Perform light machine maintenance (e.g., waxing, blade changes, belt replacements)
  • Support other volunteers with hands-on repairs and troubleshooting
  • Identify when a repair needs escalation to senior volunteers or contractors
  • Answer woodworking-related questions and provide shop demos as needed
  • Help members redesign or rework their projects for better safety or efficiency
  • Communicate with staff and other volunteers about equipment status and repair needs
  • Maintain a clean and organized shop environment

Qualifications, Skills & Requirements:

  • Strong understanding of woodworking tools and shop safety practices
  • Prior experience using and maintaining woodworking machines
  • Friendly, approachable, and comfortable teaching others
  • Willingness to work with and learn from other volunteers
  • Good communication and teamwork skills
  • Excellent management and planning skills

Time Commitment:

  • Commitment: 8-10 hrs/week. No upper limit on commitment.

Additional Information:

  • Hours submitted and verified via internal Google form
  • Onsite orientation and training provided by senior woodshop volunteers and the Board of Directors
  • Recommended attire: shop-appropriate, casual, and safety-conscious
  • Parking available directly in front of the building
  • Monitors will have full access to the facility, equipment, classes, and community
