River Program Intern

This River Program Intern position is within the Visitor and Resource Protection Division at Dinosaur National Monument. The position will be supervised by the River Program Manager. The minimum time commitment is 40 hours/week and at least 2 months.

DUTIES: Assisting with the administration of the river permit program and concession management program, including performing boater check-ins at river launches * Assisting with river patrols and project work on single to multi-day trips through remote canyons and whitewater up to Class IV • Organizing and maintaining the river cache, equipment, and vehicles • Shuttling river staff to and from launch areas within the monument • Assisting staff with packing, loading, and unloading  • Assisting with property inventory • Data compilation and entry • Assisting staff with Search And Rescue (SAR) and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) calls • Conducting cultural site inspections  • General river-related assistance with visitors via phone, internet, mail, and in person

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

•Successful candidate will have previous land management experience and/or secondary education in recreation, administration, botany, ecology or resource-related field, history, geology, paleontology, or archaeology. Whitewater experience is a plus. Trailering skills is also a plus. 

•Being a self-starter. Advanced medical certification such as First Responder or EMT is a plus.

• After training, being able to figure out what needs to be done and how to it, all the while finding ways to keep the supervisors appraised of your actions, without requiring excessive amounts of their time.

• Knowledge of NPS rules and regulations would be a plus.

• Minimum time commitment 2 months.

Area Information: Dinosaur National Monument encompasses 211,000 acres with varied scenery and diversity of plant and animal life. Recreational opportunities include hiking, bird watching, photography, backcountry camping, bicycling, and river rafting. Several well known ski resorts such as Steamboat and Park City are less than three hours away. Vernal (a small city approx. 35 miles away from the CO side) has a wide variety of restaurants, several grocery stores, numerous shopping opportunities, an amazing community recreation center, and new library, a 5-plex movie theater, a regional hospital, and a state park natural history museum. Background checks are required and must be approved prior to the start of work. Personal transportation is strongly recommended.
