About this Opportunity
*** Positions to utilize the park RV pads are now open! Apply today! ***
In the fall of 1863, Union and Confederate forces locked in a struggle over the railroad town of Chattanooga, known as the "Gateway to the Deep South." Two armies totaling more than 130,000 soldiers clashed together in the woods and farmlands of north Georgia in September in the Battle of Chickamauga. The Confederates were victorious at Chickamauga, however renewed fighting in Chattanooga that November provided Union troops victory and control of the city. Preserved in 1890 as the nation's first national military park, commemorating the actions and bravery of both sides, Chickamauga & Chattanooga NMP now manages over 9,000 acres with stories stretching back 12,000 years and forward to the present day.
Trail Crew members work outdoors on a variety of different terrains working with other volunteers and park staff maintaining, repairing, and improving trails around the park. Work is accomplished on scheduled days throughout the year, usually on Saturdays for approximately 4 hours per day (longer or shorter as necessary). Duties include:
- Assessing trail needs
- Clearing brush and tree fall from trails
- Maintaining water bars
- Reconstructing trail tread
- Utilizing non-powered hand tools to accomplish maintenance tasks
- Other duties as required
Requirements: Trail Crew members must:
- Be at least 18 years of age or work with the park volunteer coordinator to obtain parental permission to work on park property
- Commit to at least one workday per year
- Be able to lift up to 20 pounds

- Additional Requirements for RV Volunteers:
- Volunteers wishing to utilize one of the park's RV pads are required to volunteer 32 hours/week for a 2-3 month period. Volunteers will be asked to complete a mixture of independent and team volunteer activities to assess and maintain park trails. As needed by staff, volunteers may also be asked to join rangers in a non-law enforcement capacity on boundary patrol, walking and marking park boundaries while inspecting for boundary encroachments.
