About this Opportunity

Duties: 

Maintenance volunteers will assist the park’s maintenance staff in a variety of daily activities that help give visitor’s a great experience, such as:

  • Various landscape and gardening activities including laying sod, planting, mulching, watering, and pruning
  • Cutting and removing brush and digging and filling trenches
  • Cleaning and preparing buildings for painting; touch up painting on wood or metal surfaces
  • Hauling material with wheelbarrow
  • Loading trash and debris into dump trucks and other vehicles
  • Spreading sand on ice and shoveling walkways during inclement weather
  • Limbing of large trees; small scale tree removal
  • Trail rehabilitation and repairs
  • Leaf and litter removal from the battlefield

Minimum Commitment: 

5 hours a week 

Knowledge and Abilities Required: 

  • Safe use of hand and power tools and ability to operate gas powered equipment
  • Ability to perform routine equipment/shop maintenance tasks
  • Ability to learn simple, routine tasks relevant to specific trades
  • Ability to read and follow instructions and established safety procedures
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods of time at moderate physical effort

Fort Donelson is always looking for volunteers with specialized skills as well.
