Share history with visitors at two historic estates on the shores of one of the most beautiful lakes in our country – Lake Tahoe! We are seeking interpretive volunteers who are enthusiastic, friendly and interested in making visiting this site a wonderful experience for the public.

A century ago, what is now the Tallac Historic Site held the title "Grandest Resort in the World" and was the summer retreat for three of San Francisco Bay Area's socially elite families. Today, the remains of the resort and the restored estates attract thousands of visitors annually to recapture this bygone and significant era in Tahoe's history. The Site is operated by the USFS in partnership with the nonprofit Tahoe Heritage Foundation.

Tahoe Heritage Foundation seeks interpretive volunteers who are friendly, enthusiastic, and interested in making visiting this site a wonderful experience for the public.

Season and shifts: The Tallac Historic Site is open to the public seven days a week from Memorial Day weekend through to the last weekend of September. The volunteer season is divided into 3 - Sessions, 8 weeks each. Volunteers may stay one, two or three consecutive or alternating sessions, depending upon availability. Please specify your session preference and availability on your application.

Session 1:  the Site opens to the public Memorial Day Weekend; seven days a week for programs & tours, museum & gift shop. Volunteers are very involved in these daily activities. 'Spring Clean-up", Maintenance & restoration projects, exhibits and opening of all buildings begins.

Session 2: the Site is open 7 days a week for programs, tours, museum, gift shop and special events including Heritage Days every Wednesday, Sunset Soiree and Annual Gatsby Festival & Tea. Volunteers are very involved in daily activites and special events. Maintenance and restorations projects are ongoing.

Session 3: the Site is open 7 days a week for programs, tours, museum, gift shop and special events including Tahoe Terror. Volunteers are very involved in daily activites and special events. Maintenance and restorations projects are ongoing. Tours and programs end by the last weekend in September and volunteers assist with closing all exhibits and buildings.

Location: The Tallac Historic Site is located along Highway 89 on the south shore of Lake Tahoe, three miles north of South Lake Tahoe.

Duties: Assist with opening the Site for the season. Then...

• Staff the Tallac Museum; greet visitors, answer visitor questions, educate visitors about the Site and local area, promote tours and programs, provide excellent customer service. Thoroughly clean Museum prior to each day opening.
• Staff the Tallac Museum Gift Shop; customer service, Point-of-Sale system and cash handling, selling tour and program tickets, cleaning and restocking.
• Interpretive tours and programs; Interpretive volunteers communicate the story of the Tallac Site through formal programs, tours, and informal visitor contacts, portraying people- both actual and fictional- who might have lived, worked, or visited the estates during the 1920’s.
• Garden; Interpretive volunteers who are interested and able will assist with maintaining the gardens. During session1, there is a lot of garden work to be done cleaning up after winter and preparing for the season.

When not directly involved in the above duties, volunteers will assist with planning programs, laundry, gardening, raking, etc. All of the buildings and exhibits are cleaned on a regular basis and all Interpretive Volunteers will be scheduled to help. All volunteers will share in general Site maintenance duties including but not limited to trash pick-up, cleaning of buildings and exhibits, daily opening and closing of buildings.

This position involves average to moderate activity.

Many activities on the Site require lifting, carrying, bending, climbing stairs, walking on uneven surfaces. Activities may include walking, standing, and /or sitting outdoors or in non-climate controlled buildings for hours at a time. Volunteers must be able to work alone or as part of a team, with or without direct supervision.

RV Volunteers serve four days/28 hours each week in exchange for an RV camping site. If couples are applying for an RV site please note that both volunteers are required to commit to 28 hours per week each.

Housing and Amenities: RV campsites are made available through the Tahoe Heritage Foundation  (under a Group Volunteer Agreement with US Forest Service, Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit) to volunteers traveling from out of the area (more than 50 miles from  the site) . Sites include water & power hookups and shared laundry facilities. Most sites include sewer hookups. There are 2 RV sites - 1. Full hookups 1/4 mile from historic site 2. Water & power hookups, close dumpsite with provided Blue Boy, located close to the water on the historic site. You must provide your own RV - no tents allowed. Unfortunately, we are not able to assist with other housing accommodations.
