About this Opportunity
Volunteer gatehouse attendants are the primary contact for all visitors to the Sherwood Lake Recreation Area. Gatehouse attendants are an integral and respected member of the recreation team on the Monongahela National Forest.
Lake Sherwood is a complete family recreation area offering a wide variety of activities. Lake Sherwood, the largest lake in the Monongahela National Forest, is a 165-acre impoundment at an elevation of 2700 feet above sea level. The recreation area includes a large campground, swimming beaches, a picnic area, and trails. Located at the end of State Route 14 near Neola, West Virginia.
Duties and responsibilities of Gatehouse Attendants include:
- Opening and closing the campground gate daily
- Staff the Gatehouse to greet visitors, issue visitor permits and passes, collect fees, provide brochures and maps to visitors, compile daily use records, daily check/clean the gatehouse
- Provide updates to Ranger Offices and other recreation facilities on campsite availability
- Patrol the campground with a Forest Service provided electric cart to post reservation placards at campsites, open and close the beach-house, and maintain records of campground occupancy.
- Assist with delivery of campground programs (Smokey Bear, crafts, movie nights)
- Report maintenance issues and suspicious/inappropriate visitor activity to Forest Service staff members and/or law enforcement.
Due to the nature of this position, couples or teams of 2 are preferred. Many times one member of the team will be out in the campground checking on campsites and relaying information back to the other member of the team at the gatehouse.
In an effort to provide consistent and dependable service to our visitors this opportunity requires a commitment of a minimum of 6 weeks.
Gatehouse Attendants must also be able to supply their own self-contained camping unit such as an RV, pull behind trailer, or fifth wheel trailer. Full hookups are available. To apply for a Camp Host position on the Monongahela National Forest, you will need to fill out a volunteer application and submit at least three references.
Please note we conduct background checks on all applicants. A reimbursement for allowable expenses may be available. A full hookup campsite is also provided for volunteer hours.
