Volunteer Position Purpose:

Visit with families of pediatric patients to offer encouragement, and items on the Hospitality Cart.

Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Follow all policies and procedures of Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital including, but not limited to dress code, infection prevention, confidentiality, and safety.

  • Volunteer garment and hospital volunteer ID badge must be worn at all times while on duty. Clock in and out for all volunteer shifts.

  • Ensure edible items on cart are not "out of date".

  • Never offer any food/beverage to patients.

  • Only visit patients/families/visitors in approved pediatric areas.

  • Check with clinical staff for any questions/concerns related to visiting in that area.

Qualifications, Skills, & Requirements:

  • Interpersonal skills required include good communication and active listening skills, initiative, caring, good judgement.

  • Good work ethic with high energy level. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

  • Must feel comfortable interacting with clinical staff, patients, families, and visitors to fulfill requests as appropriate for volunteer role.

  • Moderate to high level physical activity with walking, stretching, reaching, moving cart.

Time Commitment:

Volunteers must be able to commit long term (at least 6 months). Each volunteer must attend at least two shifts per month. Shifts are flexible based on availability and typically take an hour and a half to two hours.

Other Information:

  • Volunteers are required to complete onboarding/training with RMHC Richmond and St. Mary’s Hospital.

  • Volunteers must successfully complete a Criminal Background Check and T-Spot Test (Tuberculosis Screening).

  • Face masks covering the mouth and nose are required in specific parts of the hospital.

  • Beginning in November, volunteers must have proof of Flu Vaccination on file with St. Mary’s Hospital Volunteer Services.

  • Must be comfortable standing or walking for long periods of time. Ability to lift/carry items that are at least 25 pounds.
