About this Opportunity

The Village of Corning, Ohio¿population under 500¿is a proud Appalachian community with deep roots in coal, rail, and hard work. Incorporated in 1880 during the railroad boom, Corning has weathered decades of economic decline. But this town isn¿t done yet.

Led by former Mayor Scott Moore, now chair of the County Park District, Corning is pushing forward with plans to create new opportunities through local investment, heritage, and tourism. Corning aims to launch several key revitalization projects: repurposing the old high school into a Community Center with business space and ADA access, building a public event stage and restroom in the park, establishing a Farmers Market/greenhouse annex, and securing a permanent home for the municipal government. The town also plans to develop a youth learning center, local history museum, and affordable rental space for wellness services or small businesses.

Corning is home to the Little Cities of Black Diamonds Festival and lies near Burr Oak State Park and the 1,400-mile Buckeye Trail¿perfect for recreation-based tourism. Our region has hosted interns and volunteers through Rural Action and welcomes new energy to help restore its economic future.

Decades of population loss have challenged the village, but recent demolitions of unsafe buildings and a successful Neighborhood Revitalization Grant have opened doors. We¿re focused on jobs, local pride, and turning assets into long-term growth. With support from local partners and the Ohio Folk Centers network, we¿re working to connect people to healthcare, job training, and regional identity. This VISTA position will help carry that vision forward.
