About this Opportunity

Opportunity Overview:

As a Livestock Volunteer at Weir River Farm, you will have the opportunity to assist our farm staff in the care of our livestock feeding goats, sheep, chickens, and pigs, filling water troughs, and completing general barnyard maintenance. The ideal candidate will have experience with livestock and can commit to a weekly schedule.

Currently, we are looking for volunteers for the following shifts:
AM: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday
PM: Sunday, Friday, Saturday

This opportunity will foster a deeper connection for the volunteer to the farm, provide insight into typical farm management and offer significant enjoyment while interacting with our livestock. Minimum age: 18

Reports to: Weir River Farm Livestock Manager

Responsibilities (may include but are not limited to the following):

  • Moving water troughs and refilling with water
  • Feeding livestock
  • General barnyard maintenance like mucking stalls, spreading shavings, and collecting eggs
  • Moving temporary fencing with the help of farm staff
  • Following a rotational grazing plan decided on by the staff
  • Logging volunteer hours
Qualifications:
  • Ability to provide own transportation to the farm
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Ability to walk relatively long distances (2-3 miles maximum) in varying New England weather conditions on various surfaces including grass, pavement and other uneven surfaces
  • Prior experience working with livestock
  • Willingness to work with others as well as independently
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Reliable and dependable
  • Minimum age: 18
  • Please note: a background check may be required for this role
Time commitment:
Volunteering takes place in the morning (5:30-9:30am) and afternoon/evening (4-7pm). Most volunteer tasks can be completed in an hour and should be completed during these shift times. Must commit to weekly assignments. Various shifts are available. 
A minimum commitment of 3 months is preferred. 
Livestock volunteers are required to find substitutes from our volunteer roster when unable to attend their assigned shift.
