About this Opportunity

There are many benefits to working as a campground host in Chaco, a World Heritage site, and International Dark Sky Park, and a National Historical Park in New Mexico:

  • A complimentary campsite in the campground, including electric, water, and sewage hook-ups. Or an older model Airstream for those without their own RV.
  • Access to abundant back country hiking opportunities.
  • Within a day’s drive of numerous NPS sites and other recreational opportunities in the Four Corners Region.
  • The opportunity to live and work in arguable the most important archaeological and cultural site in the United States.
  • Within a couple hour drive of restaurants that serve the iconic New Mexican cuisine.

Gallo Campground has 32 campsites: 27 tent/RV combination sites and 5 RV only sites. The RV only sites can accommodate trailers/campers up to 35 feet. The campground is very busy during the spring and fall, slowing down in the hottest part of the summer. Throughout the season there will be many guided tours of archaeological sites, weekly night sky programs, and seasonal special events which you can attend.

Duties of a Camp Host include:

  • Greet and introduce yourself to out campers as they arrive, confirm their reservations and inform them of Chaco’s park and camping rules, park and camping fees, and inform them about the park. Hosts are expected to assist visitors who stop by the host campsites.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly campground: pull expired fee tags, remove ashes from fire pits, pick up trash throughout campground, trim and pull weeds. Hosts are expected to notify Park Maintenance of any problems that may occur, such as toilet or sink issues.
  • Ensure visitors comply with park and campground rules and notify Park Law Enforcement of any violations and/or emergencies.
  • Use a handheld radios to communicate with park staff and other volunteers in a professional manner.

A minimum commitment of two months is required and we are looking for hosts for the months of March through October. The season will be divided into 4 blocks: March-April, May-June, July-August, and September-October.

Please note that Chaco Culture National Historical Park is in the high desert of New Mexico and is very isolated. Access to common amenities, such as grocery stores and hospitals is limited. Volunteers will have to drive at least 60 miles to reach the closest stores. Weather during the season can include snow in March - April, monsoon rains in July - August, high temperatures between June - September, and cold night during September - October.
